MTV True Life Synopsis

For most teenagers Acne is a part of growing up. Nasty zits pop up for
a week or two, but then just as quickly disappear. But for some people
Acne is an embarrassing, crippling and sometimes painful deformity
that never goes away.

People with severe Acne often struggle with being able to face the
outside world, trying to figure out ways to avoid having to talk to or
be close with people. Going to the store, or to class becomes a
fearful venture into potential ridicule.

Snickers, and suggestions that bad skin is a measure of cleanliness or
an indicator of an unhealthy diet makes people feel like they're to
blame for their Acne. Yet treating Acne can be an elusive challenge
even for the most accomplished dermatologists.

The misconception that Acne is a matter of vanity has led health
insurance carriers to limit their coverage of treatment. But many
people afflicted with Acne suffer pain from extensive breakouts, deep
depression and paralyzing anxiety. It can permeate all aspects of
their life creating deep psychological wounds.

And for many patients, even after spending thousands of dollars on
over the counter treatments, Proactive-type solutions, and procedures
at the dermatologist they are still left with painful scarring Acne.
The last stop to get rid of their Acne is Accutane, a serious drug
with side effects so severe it requires monthly checkups.

While teens talk about dieting, weight and body image- Acne is such an
embarrassing topic that people shy away from discussing it in any
meaningful way. Some pretend it doesn't exist and some crack jokes
about their Acne to cut off any potential remarks, but there's no
denying it's an issue that affects all of us.

In this episode of True Life, we'll follow the lives of three young
people living with severe Acne who are trying to overcome school-yard
jabs and feelings of inadequacy in face of the possibility their Acne
will never go away.
