I actually created something not that different from this at CWRU when I was there.. We had an IRS approved non-profit that supported education opportunities for masters students and a related for profit that helped these same students create companies. In this case things are much more separate. The LLC runs a podcast in our studio and video production co, the non-profit does public panel events at a theater in Phoenix and arranges travel excursions. The two things the companies do are different. The two are separate. They have separate boards, etc.. Moreover, we are quite explicit about any relationship, and have a clear conflict of interest policy which we also sent to the IRS. Lawrence M. Set up costs so far have been about $20K.. I expect initial costs to be about $40K. Besides me and the Holwerda brothers, I have just taken in two other investors, John Edwards and Rob Zeps, who have put in $30K apiece for a 7.5% share in the company, which will allow us to startup without depleting my own depleted resources. We anticipate first tapings in early march, and hopefully going live, with audio for free and video available upon donation by april sometime. If we get 20K subscribers, which seems reasonable given my 800K followers on twitter and facebook, we should gross upward of $480K in the first year, so these investors should hopefully recoup much of their investment after a year. or so.
