You call it what he called it. ## "Our Secret Society" On April 20, 2017, Jeffrey Epstein exchanged iMessages with an anonymous female neurosurgeon who was working inside bgC3 — Bill Gates's private think tank — through an arrangement brokered by Larry Cohen.[1](#sources) The woman was feeding Epstein intelligence from inside the Gates operation. She called bgC3 "very fake." She said Gates was "trapped." She reported his private political views on Trump: that he "will never get the budget cuts through," that "his foundation has a 30 year life," and that when Gates "goes to see Jared and Ivanka they tell him he is a genius." She reported on Gates's senior leadership — "mark Suzman geoff lamb and the full development advisory leadership" — calling them "SO OLD GUARD" and "gargoyles refusing to let other opinions in." Then Epstein extended an invitation: > "both are welcome to **our secret society**, they will join joi ito ed boyden and caleb (mit agro)." Joi Ito, then director of the MIT Media Lab. Ed Boyden, MIT neuroscientist and inventor of optogenetics. Caleb — identified only as "MIT agro." And now two more recruits, welcomed in by the man who funded them all. This wasn't metaphor. This wasn't irony. This was Epstein's operating vocabulary for his network, deployed casually in an iMessage, the way you'd tell someone the dress code for a party. ## "Friend of the First Circle" The secret society had tiers. On June 5, 2016, Epstein texted David Stern — the former NBA Commissioner — about a lunch the following day:[2](#sources) > "Will you be at the Reid Hoffman lunch tomorrow with Pa?" "Pa" was Prince Andrew, Duke of York. Epstein was orchestrating a lunch between the LinkedIn co-founder and the Queen's second son, and he wanted Stern in the room. Stern hesitated: "Tomorrow I am dinner at Windsor castle but can probably also be at lunch if you think I should." Windsor Castle. The actual Windsor Castle. Stern's calendar was so dense with royals that attending two separate events with British aristocracy in twenty-four hours required scheduling. Epstein pressed: > "You should meet Reid and tell him you are **part of the club**." Then: > "Tell him you are a **friend of the first circle**." "The club." "The first circle." These aren't casual phrases. They describe a tiered access structure — concentric rings of trust and utility, with Epstein at the center, deciding who gets told what, who gets introduced to whom, and who gets to call themselves an insider. He added a value proposition — "You could be helpful to him in China" — leveraging Stern's NBA China connections as a gift to Hoffman. Then, almost tenderly: "And I loved his gift of the special pen." Reid Hoffman had given Jeffrey Epstein a pen. Epstein was still cherishing it months later. Stern confirmed: "I will be at the lunch tomorrow." ## The Room A few months after the Stern exchange, Epstein emailed a profile piece about himself to his own inbox — a draft attributed to Michael Wolff, apparently commissioned as part of a "get out in front" effort before media scrutiny intensified.[3](#sources) It describes his Manhattan townhouse — "among the largest in Manhattan" — and the parade of luminaries who visited despite his conviction. "Still so many come. Gladly. Willingly. Feeling that his invitation is frankly quite an extraordinary privilege." Wolff's portrait describes the operation in a single phrase: > "by careful design, exclusive and clubby, **part hang out, part secret society**." Epstein kept this description. He sent it to himself. He did not object to the characterization. Because it was accurate. The piece describes a dinner "two nights before" the interview: six technology entrepreneurs representing over $100 billion, sitting at Epstein's table, "trying to figure out how to use their resources in order to help shape the world." Topics on the whiteboard: missions to Mars, age reversal, the Big Bang, teleportation, artificial intelligence, synthetic biology. Among the frequent guests: Bill Gates, for whom Epstein had become a "friend, proposing a way to leverage the resources of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to accommodate many other fortunes." Gates. Six tech billionaires. A whiteboard. A convicted sex offender as host. And a profile piece that describes it all as "part secret society" — circulated by Epstein himself. ## "A New World Order" The vocabulary extended beyond the inner circle. On August 14, 2013, Martin Nowak — Harvard mathematician and director of the Program for Evolutionary Dynamics, funded by Epstein — emailed:[4](#sources) > "that biology is not based on physics is a **new world order** and it is right" The next day, returning from a visit to one of Epstein's properties:[5](#sources) > "i just came back thank you so much for the beautiful time **creating a new world order...**" A Harvard professor, thanking a registered sex offender for a "beautiful time creating a new world order." In writing. Epstein used the phrase himself. In December 2009, an associate asked for economic predictions to use at "a private blue chip lunch." Epstein replied:[6](#sources) > "a **new world order** commodity prices likely up, metals up, unemplyment and the stock market up." The correspondent pushed back: "New world order? Markets up, but also unemployment?" Epstein: "exactly, a little like brazil. this is an unintended consequence of computers and the internet." He wasn't ranting. He was forecasting. "New world order" was just vocabulary — the natural frame for how he discussed macro shifts. Not conspiracy theory. Operating language. ## The Inbound Perhaps the most revealing document is the shortest. On August 12, 2010, an unknown person emailed Epstein's vacation account:[7](#sources) > "Suggestions for an old guy. super smart / well connected that wants to continue legacy of **'old school' secret society**?" Someone was asking Jeffrey Epstein — by name, directly — who should carry the torch for an "old school secret society." The sender is redacted. No reply survives in the archive. But the question tells you everything about how Epstein was perceived by his network. He wasn't adjacent to this world. He was the person you consulted about succession planning. ## The Vocabulary Was Theirs For decades, "secret society" has been a dismissal — the phrase that marks you as a crank. Conspiracy theorists use it and feel validated. Mainstream commentators hear it and reach for the tinfoil metaphor. Both sides assume the language originates outside the room. The Epstein documents show otherwise. Epstein called it "our secret society." He instructed David Stern to identify himself as a "friend of the first circle" — at a lunch with Prince Andrew. He endorsed a profile describing his world as "part secret society." His Harvard contacts thanked him for "creating a new world order." And someone — name redacted — asked him who should inherit the legacy of an "old school secret society." The vocabulary wasn't imposed by outsiders. It was the insider vocabulary. The difference between the conspiracy theory and the documentary record is that the real version isn't a shadowy cabal in a vault beneath a European castle. It's a dining room on the Upper East Side with a whiteboard. It's an iMessage thread about a neurosurgeon planted inside Bill Gates's think tank. It's a former NBA commissioner checking whether his Windsor Castle dinner conflicts with a Prince Andrew lunch. It's mundane. It's documented.
